The West Hollywood City Council has voted to ban the sale of clothing made in whole or part from the pelt or skin of an animal with hair, wool or fur.  West Hollywood is the first place in the United States to ban the sale of fur clothing.  PETA fans must be happy now!

Animal activists had been pushing the fur free campaign since earlier this year and on Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 they won a 5-0 vote.  Of course not everyone was happy with the vote.  Representatives of businesses in the city are opposed to the ban and say that it will hurt their sales.  There have been some stores that are threatening to move out of the city.

The West Hollywood City Council plans to meet again in two weeks to set the exact effective date which is set for June of 2012.  They will also discuss penalties for violating the ban and whether to provide exemptions for vintage clothing.
